we need to be encouraging the american people to come together, not dividing one another. some of the rhetoric is too hot for both sides of the aisle. got to lay off that. talk about the things that bring us together. >> a lot can change and a lot will change between now and november. the obama campaign clearly thinks ohio and virginia have the ability to tip the scales one way or the other. even though romney spent time in both stays already now that the president is going to be flying in town on air force 1. the stakes have been raised. back to you. >> they sure have. we will be talking to dick morris about that as well. >> the president making an appearance in virginia. to taught some of these new jobs numbers. get to his sound in a moment. new numbers out on friday did not look favorable for the obama administration. mitt romney quick to pounce on these numbers down to 8.1% which on the surface down from 8.2% probably good. the devil is really in the details here. >> why did the number go down?

342,000 americans left the workforce. how to spin it as a real positive when you have only got 115,000 jobs created. on the other hand, what mitt romney said, still came quite a bold statement. and prediction. listen. >> there was some news that came across the wire that said that the unemployment rate has dropped to 8.1%. normally that would be cause for celebration. but, in fact, anything over 8%, anything near 8%. anything over 4% is not cause for celebration. but, in fact, the reason it dropped from 8.2 to 8.1 was not because we created a lot of jobs. as a matter of fact, only 115,000 net jobs were created. well beneath what it was expected to be. it should have been in the hundreds of thousands but it wasn't. the reason the rate came down was because about 340,000 people dropped out of the workforce. so many became discouraged

they stopped looking for work. and if you stop looking for work, the stats tuitions are able to say the unemployment rate is lower now because not some people want work. >> interesting predictions our own ed henry looked into his time as governor of massachusetts and even when he was governor he only managed to get unemployment down to 4.7%. 4% is a long shot. the last time that happened was under president bill clinton. >> specifically what i was talking about he went on to say that we ought to be creating some 500,000 jobs a month if this recovery were where it ought to be. that's where i thought he really perhaps overreached. >> overpromised. the president also talked about the jobs numbers. he basically said that he can't do it alone. he was calling on congress to do their part. >> we're going to recover all the jobs that were lost during the recession. and if we're going to build a

secure economy that strengthens the middle class we have to do more. that's why next week i'm going to urge congress as they start getting back to work to take some actions on some common sense ideas right now that can accelerator even more job growth. my message to congress is just saying no to ideas that will create new jobs is not an option. there is too much at stake for us not to all be rowing in the same direction. >> he went on to site the numbers from his administration 4.2 million jobs created in this recession over the past time and trying to climb out of this dark hole he says. >> i mean, of course, that he says just saying no things that create jobs is not an option. critics would say that's exactly what the president has done saying no to the keystone pipeline he has said no so something that would create thousands of jobs. >> they say if the percentage of adults in the workforce were the same today as it were when he came into office we would have an 11.1%

>> welcome back to "fox & friends" as we just reported. it sounds like this could be good news, right in the unemployment rate falling slightly from 8.2% down to 8.1% last month. only 115,000 jobs were created. does this mean the economy is stuck in neutral or is the prognosis even worse than that? >> joining us from d.c. this morning. fox news contributor and business leader and mentor amelia antoinettey. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> do i think mitt romney may have overreached on what he thinks would be a good number. but it's hard to celebrate this if you are the president. isn't it? >> oh, absolutely it is. it is is really hard to celebrate if you are actually anybody in the workplace or actually a business owner. the reality is the numbers are not as strong as they need to be. they are not. we are off by miles on this because we have got so much to catch up for. and some people run employed. we all know somebody right now who has been unemployed far

longer than they ever wanted to be. >> let's dive in some of the numbers. you are in the workforce and you work in a maul business sector you see some of these companies hiring or not hiring. we heard companies slowing down of the hiring process. what's to account for that? by all accounts manufacturing coming up. maybe construction picking back up. why the slow down? >> a lot of it -- first of all definitely lack of resources. definitely lack of predictability. also the over bourbon some to predict what takes on emilyee. part time or 1099 or other means to bring on employee to see if i really want to invest in them and not put myself and commit myself for the regulations for a w-2 hire. >> not only is it tough to get a job. impossible to get a raise in this economy. employers are making it worse. now a new trend is asking for new hire's w 2 so they can prove what they made in their previous job. i had this happen just a couple of years ago, not here.

but i was stunned by it and i said absolutely not. is this legal? and is it a growing trend? >> well, it is legal. i think this is definitely where big companies and small companies kind of divide here. because in reality, for me as a small business owner, i am far more liable for asking that than i would ever want to be. because i basically hire in the salary that i can afford. even if you may be great and fabulous. the reality is my budget is my budget is my budget. i need to find other lifestyle things that i can do as a small business person to entice you to work for me. it can't just be about what the salary is it's important, yes, but validating it for me not as important as what it exposes me now that i have to protect that information and now it opens me up to huge confrontation with my employees. i don't want that in my office. >> exactly other employees in the workforce to say i made this, you made. this look at what i'm making right now. amelia, always great to he see you. thanks for getting up earl

here was a hall of famer who seemed to have it all. one football player says he understands his pain and it's more common than we think. high profile punter for the baltimore ravens and houston oilers, he he hid his own mental illness for years. and he believes many professional football players are doing the same. he is the president of every mn-dot organize. coalition to increase mental health research. also with us is dr. tina sety. neurologist and treating physician with the new york giants. thank you both for being here. >> thanks, ali. >> great to have you here. i want to start with you. what did you think when you heard of junior seau's death? >> i was shocked. i really thought about his family and i immediately thought about my family. i could totally relate to the emotional pain that he must have been going through. depression carries a level of fear and hopelessness that can spin us out and by the grace of god i'm still here. i mean, to be totally candid,

i actually had a manic episode and subsequent depression and i'm down here in florida being treated here at behavioral health of the palm beaches. and it's been a tough time. and seeing what happened to junior and seeing what happened to his whole family, it's been a tragedy. >> and, greg, you know, we really appreciate you sharing this personal part of your life. we know it's not easy to talk about it publicly. can you help us explain what happens to professional football players? i'm not talking about the physical impact of the job of getting hit in the head. obviously that's taking a toll and we will talk to the doctor about it in a second. but the emotional impact of the lifestyle? you guys have it all, right? fame and fortune? what goes wrong? >> well, making the transition from a gladiator to citizen q is very difficult process. the injuries and the brain trauma aside, when you are in the spotlight, and all of a sudden the curtain comes down

for the final time, it's very difficult to make that transition back into society. i mean, we don't only have an identity crisis, but we need to reinvent ourselves and fit back in. and if you look at the statistics of divorce and bankruptcy to all the nfl retired players, i mean, there is really no -- there is no wonder that there is a lot of depression out there. i really feel there needs to be a better transition from pros to citizenship. >> we know that you are working on that. dr. sety, i want to bring you in now because let's talk about the physical impact. one of junior seau's teammates just yesterday in "u.s.a. today" reported he estimated junior seau must have had about 1500 concussions during his career. is there a link between concussions and depression and mental illness. >> concussion disrupts chemical reaction in the brain and repeated may lead to depression. having said that without a

clearly documented concussion history, any assumption that the head trauma that he may or may not have had have led to his depression is purely speculative. >> we know his family is actually donating his brain to science so that this can be studied. so, in other words, we're just on the cusp of figuring out the limping. >> exactly. there is a lot of research being done currently to investigate that further. the pathology is essential to diagnose the condition of chronic traumatic encephalopathy. precise incidence of enaccept plop patty after head injury is unknown and may be higher than we think. >> greg obviously depression and mental illness effects people not just professional football players. you are trying to help people and build awareness for that. what do you say to people today who are struggling? >> i think the big word is communication. we have to get educated and make sure that we build a support group. there is a lot of great

know, if she chose to, if she wanted to, she could have rifled through any of this agent's stuff because he was sound asleep all night long. now, we don't know what kind of sensitive documents were there in the room. but we do know whatever there was, no attention was being paid to their safety and security. >> if her story is to be believed, that she said that had she been a terrorist, she could have gotten her hands on sensitive or classified documentation because he was in a stupor basically is the way describes it sleeping off a bender that he was on after consuming tons of vodka she said. >> she said that he shoe walked out in the hallway when she wasn't getting her money from him and supposed to get the $800 and she was only given 3 a went down the hallway and saw a police officer down the hallway. this is when this whole thing unfolded the police officer walked back to the room with her. they knocked on the door. they could see the secret service agent's feet under the door he wouldn't answer the door because he sees the feet

under the peephole. knowing if secret service agent. >> if she had known he was a member of the secret service, she actually would have never culled the local police because all the scandal has really brought a lot of trouble into her life. something she never wanted to' happen. she never. to the come out in public. everything that has happened has not been any good for her. if she had learned that he was a member of the secret service, she would never have called the police and made all this happen. meanwhile a story you have been hearing an awful lot on this network a week or so or 10 days the spirit airline where they refused to refund a vietnam vet who bass dying and told he wasn't healthy enough to make his flight. they told him they would not refund his ticket. that is company policy regardless of your health stowers. it appears now somewhat of a happy ending for this vet the

officially kicking off election campaign today. hasn't he been campaigning all year. even some on the left are criticizing the president for being in full on campaign mode. joining us is special counsel to lanny davis. >> thank you. >> there is a new book out by a political scientist at the naval comedian in which this person has crunched the numbers president obama has already set a record for campaign fundraising. he claims that the number is 191 already. okay? we're still six months away from the election. and he says that that number is more than george w. bush and bill clinton combined. is he now the campaigner in chief? are those criticisms fair, lanny? let me start with you? >> first of all, good morning, ed, and the two of us having been in politicking for a few years. let me say how shocked i am that an incumbent president is campaigning for office as president and the opposition party is complaining. this is a shocking development

in american politics. >> lanny, it's more than other people. >> of course more. >> hear more than predecessors combined that doesn't make a dent. >> funny numbers. let's see the numbers. secondly, wouldn't you expect the republicans to said it's more and democrats say it's less. i remember when they criticized saying it's more. shocking, partisan politics, it's nothing but that. i don't think anybody can going to take this seriously. >> dana milbank wrote in a column in the "the washington post" just this welcome. he says shouldn't presidential leadership about setting an example? instead erasing blurred lines between twaining and governing. he went on to call it slizy. >> i don't know whether it's sleazy or not. they have put their top political people in very high levels in the white house. lanny, you and i have been around the game a long time. always been the political person never been the entire team. super imposed ever since the midterm elections when they took a bath in the congress.

they set up their headquarters in chicago. they have been raising money at a record pace. they basically have divided their legacy as most presidents do is getting reelected and everything else by the -- away from the boards. i think this has been a nonstop campaign. he does campaigning better than he does governing. so, you know, maybe that's what he likes and maybe that's why weeing s. doing it? >> i want to show you some political ads and one that is controversial. veterans have just released an ad. some of them include navy seals in which they object to president obama's handling of the usama bin laden raid anniversary. let's watch this new ad and get to you comment. >> i can report i directed leon pa net attachment i was briefed. i met repet 'ed willly. i called. i as commander and chief. >> we don't need to spike the football. >> i said that i would go after bin laden if we had a

clear shot at him and did i. >> suppose the navy seals had gone in there suppose they had been captured and killed. the downside would have been horrible. >> lanny, let me start with you. obviously they are pointing out that perhaps president obama has taken too much credit for this. what do you make of this? >> well, first of all, i wasn't comfortable with the political advertisement about the killing of usama bin laden. and i criticized it and i still think it was poor judgment. i think the facts speak for themselves. those excerpts are completely taken out of context. president obama gave full credit to these heroic people who killed usama bin laden. but, also, honest republicans give president obama credit for making the very tough call to send them in as opposed to other options. but he has done too much in my opinion and it it's a political mistake to exploit this. he should have allowed the

facts to speak for themselves and certainly a political ad was wrong timing in my view. >> the political ad you are talking about is the president's observe political ad that we are seeing now on the other side of our screen. what do you make of the criticism of the president? >> the criticism is very legitimate. the president made the right decision and it's a courageous decision but more important. the navy seals our special forces are extraordinary group of young men and women. went out and did the job. the key thing here is from the night that it happened a year ago, the white house staff ran out and took credited for a whole bunch of things they shouldn't have and addition closed a whole bunch of stuff they shouldn't have. at the end of the day america will not tolerate and navy seals and veterans don't want to be used as political props. they want to do the job and do it well and fight for a very long fevered time. the real battle is going to be over the defense budget. i would hope that president obama and mr. romney will discuss the drastic cuts that they are talking about making here that will basically put

i said -- i lived downtown denver. i said hey, i'm downtown, a few blocks away from the stadium. i have my gloves. let's go do. this he responded and said when you can be here? i hopped in a cab and headed to the stadium. >> seconds later you are walking through the boughs of coors field something you had only seen on tv. you are on the field, throwing, playing catch with a rockies pitcher. how surreal was it? how were your emotions? >> it took a while to sink. in as i was walking through the clubhouse i was like this is kind of crazy. it was all hitting me it was a really cool experience. >> he was obviously taking aback by the fact that you are an amputee. you are high school kid that had to endure cancer. such an upbeat outlook for you. that's what's amazing. do you stand up comedy. do you motivational speaking. what is your message for people going through cancer, going through tough times? >> i guess my message is that, you know, there are better

kids want to come back and live in their parent's basement. >> well, it's free. >> right. who could turn that down? eventually they leave but they stay longer. >> they push them out. your book has got me thinking. standing in backyard looking up in a tree that has been hanging there since hurricane irene came down and these branches are we called the city government. we have asked them to come out and try to take care of these branches that are on the power lines no less. if i would call a local tree service, they would be there the next day. your book drives home the message though that the government just can't get things done effectively. tell us more. >> but we can. the subtitle is individuals succeed. how did we get flush toilets and air conditions. the private sector does amazing stuff. government fails again and again and, yet, when we are scared, when we see a problem, our instinct is to say there ought to be law. so it gets bigger. >> right.

arguing with her that then the hotel staff had to call the police. let's listen. if she had nope he was a member of the secret service she would never have called the police. all this scandal brought trouble in her life. something she never wanted to happen. she never wanted to come out in public. everything that has happened has not been any good for her. if she had learned that he he was a member of the secret service, she never would have called the police and made all this happen. >> so while that scandal just won't go away, the spirit airlines ceo is hoping that his p.r. black eye will go away. something he he is doing this morning he hopes will put it to an end. you might know about the vietnam vet who is dying and told that spirit airlines would not refund his money for a ticket. even though he was dying, news this morning that they are, in fact, going it refund the

money, is it too little too late? >> nice he is doing the right thing. obviously seemed like it stretched on for a week or two weeks spirit airlines had dug in their heels. they didn't want to give any special dispensation to this dying vet. they thought they would have to open othe flood gates to anybody that said they wanted a refund. that was always their excuse. but ben is the ceo and after all of this media blitz, he has agreed to refund the vets money. here is what he says. sometimes we make mistakes. in my statements regarding mr. meekins for refund i failed to say why most affordable choice. i did not demonstrate the respect and passion that i did have given his medical condition and his service to our country. >> furthermore he was only traveling at the point to see his daughter who was also sick. then he learns he has this terminal condition and has to cancel the flight. it wasn't like it was a

his message should be that he failed. he said when he came into office that he was going to restore those jobs. he said it again on your clip. 8.1% unemployment is an awful number. that slight down tick from 8.2 to 8.1, clay to be is because a bunch of people left the workforce. 115,000 jobs added but 340,000 people, adults, left the workforce. the percent of adults who are not working or who are, have given up looking for work is an a an all time high. the percent of people in the work force or looking for work is at a 30 year low. that number that is he touting only went down a little because so many people gave up. he shouldn't be proud of that he should be ashamed of that. >> you are a mitt romney supporter and some think that mitt romney overreached yesterday about some of his comments jobs number the other side hurting themselves. mitt romney said yesterday we should get that number down to 4% and he would be creating

500,000 jobs a month but even when he was governor of massachusetts only down to 4.7%. some saying it's really an impossible task to do that. the governor overreach in his commentary yesterday? >> no, i don't think so. i read his comments. he said that we shouldn't be celebrating anything over 4%. obviously anything over 4% there is a lot of work to do. in fact, 4% still means a lot of people are out of work. he says we shouldn't be doing victory laps or patting people on the back or bragging about the progress that's been made when you have anything over 4%. too many people are still out of work he came from blue collar background. whether people have a job. on that measure barack obama has failed on a lot of other stuff as well. >> you have gone on the record and said repeatedly you are not considering the number two spot. the vice presidency, although we have heard from governor

bad program or good program. >> worked for kids. overall evaluation by objective sources say head start has not been as effective as the amount of mope we have put into it. there are other ways to prepare. should we do preschool programs i think the answer is yes. is head start the best? may not be. almost like a kid without a government program they wouldn't make it without the government intervening every step of your life you would be one helpless soulless person out on the streets. wait a minute, i thought it was all about work and wasn't just what the government did for us. it's what we were able to do so we didn't have to access all those government programs. >> critics will say well, it's a made up war on women it's fitting this is imaginary video. what you just said, doesn't it perfectly frame the argument if you are a republic. do women, do you want handouts from start to finish or do you want personal responsibility? do you want an environment where you can be anything you

want to be today just look at the supreme court? >> this does set the whole election. is government's primary job to take your job from childhood walk you through life and making sure at every step of the way they help cross the corner with you or train you up so you are independent free person with absolute liberty and you have no limits to what you do no matter where you start. i kind of like the second version better. that's my own life story. you know, i didn't start out with anything. but i'm grateful that i live in a country where if you work hard, get an education, treat people right, there are no limits. and it's not that you have to sit around waiting for uncle sugar to pick up and take you to the dance. >> i wish we had free will right now. >> we have a giant sugar filled margarita dunk tank. we will be diving into the mr. sugar. >> you will be quizzing us. whoever loses gets in the dunk tank. are you ready? >> yeah, i'm ready.

you have to read them appropriate're properly. when it shows that romney and obama are tied at 43, that is not a close race. obama will not get any of the undecided votesment incumbents never do. it has always gone to the challenger so when you see a poll like in pennsylvania with obama 51 and romney at whatever. that is a 51-49 race which is close. when you see a race where romney and obama are tied at 44 each, that is not close. and that is going to be a 56-44 wipe out and maybe 55-45. and these polls show a strong lead for mitt romney. >> and what about the poll, this baby out with the bath water and coming to the economy. romney would do a better yob than obama. are we misreading the poll? >> it should be done of likely

voters and not registered vores. and the fact is, one of the things that is leading me to believe that it is it a decisive romney victory is the continuing confidence that people have in him as opposed to obama to deal with the economy it is the economy, stupid, what else is the issue? it is in particular this week, when the consensus of the economist shifted from believing that the economy would accelerate to believing it would decel brate as election day approaches, they will turn on obama in great numbers. i am for romney and therefore i am confident about the election. >> dick, you have studied past presidential races and politics for years given that the unemployment rate is 8.1 and everyone said that is not truly reflective of the job situation, when you look back

at previous presidents and the jobs, what are you seeing? >> the only two that had an unemployment rate this high hoover was much higher and carter and none of them was reelected. obama solved two enormous problems. he solved the problem of illegal immigration and tried up the jobs and no one is coming and he solved the problem of unemployment and persuading 22 million americans from working and it is it the labor force with the same size as it was when he took office unemployment would be 10 points and sevenpercent. this month they only are are upon i jobs and that is 170 less than he needs to lower real unemployment. and 400,000 people decided to drop out of the labor force and go home, and therefore,

thun -- the unemployment rate drops. most are women. and 92 percent of the job losses are among women what is happening, they are losing their jobs and figuring they can't get another job and why am i spending this money on day care and they stay home? >> that number has been going down since 2000 because baby boomers have begun to retire. isn't that a natural occurence. >> well, when barack obama took office there were 70 million americans not in the labor force. and 135 million who were working age adultings now 139 who are working in the labor force and 100 million who are not in the labor force. it has gone from 70 mill yoil to 100 million. 80 percent is unemployed because ther looking for work.

projects and received tax breaks and back in the tsa and joining us with more is charles custanny and leading an investigation . good morning, sir. >> great to be with you, dave. >> explain how the system works. this is a tax deduction. and it came to light that gsa is anding for a pay back of 19 percent of the tax deduction in order for the contractor to receive the contract and allegation. if that is not a kick back i don't know what is. this is disturbing. >> this is what the gsa is telling us in may 2011. they launched a small pilot program to have funds on upgrades in federal buildings. and the pilot program ended.

no money was paid to the gsa. and it failed and why did no one participate in the program. it looks like a kick back scime most say woah. we'll not get involved in this. we need to find out what was going on with i demanded all of the documentation related from gsa and i also want to know what 14 other departments are doing and agencies including this. and if any other contractor has been subject to this kind of kick back scheme i want to know and i hope they contact my office. >> on a broadscale, congressman, it is not necessarily about the kick

back scheme it is oversight on the government agency. will there be an overhaul over the governments and who is watching over their spending and does there needs to be? >> the house ways and means committee that i chair is vigorously looking to root out this sort of abuse . we have other committees in congress that are workog we have to take oversight seriously. and we have to be good stewards of the taxpayer and waste, fraud and abuse is not to be tolerated in any level. i am determined to look at all of this thoroughly. and a scheme like this leads to all kinds of corruption. we are dealing with fiscal conditions that are not good. i am determined to root out waste, fraud and abuse that i can find. .
